The real-time tactical strategy game that critics adore.

Despite the name, Commandos 3 Destination Berlin is actually the fourth instalment and the most recent of the real-time tactical strategy versions of the game. The order of the games’ episodes is:

  1. Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines
  2. Commandos: Beyond the Call of Duty
  3. Commandos 2: Men of Courage
  4. Commandos 3: Destination Berlin

Should I Be Tired Of This Yet?

If you are trying the game for the first time, then you are going to be thrilled. You will be happy with the game mechanics and the tactical principle behind the game, just as the players were all those years ago when they played the first version.

If you have played the previous commando games and want to give this one a try, then you are going to experience a lot of what you experienced in the other games. It is going to repeat on you a little, but what is more surprising is just how difficult they have made the game.

The Developers Couldn’t Win

This game is the last instalment of the real-time tactical strategy versions of the game because sales were down, and that is just the way it had to be. They opted to make the game more difficult than the previous versions, and they did it because if they didn’t, then people would complain it was the same old repetitive stuff. On the other hand, by making it difficult they scared away new players, which means there was no way the developers could win.

Is Not This A Cheap And Easy Game To Make?

No, it is not. The Commando’s series is very good for the fact that the gameplay is polished and subtly complex. People that couldn’t get enough of the Commandos series went on to play “Desperados Wanted Dead Or Alive” and soon realized that even though it played the same and looked the same, that Desperados was missing the subtle complexity and genius that exists in the Commandos series.

The Game’s Weaknesses Are Its Strengths

A good example is the forced 800x600 screen or the fact you can only rotate the picture with four rotations. It means that you have objects blocking your way and you cannot see far ahead without scrolling. It adds to the challenge of the game. It is not so much that the developers “added” inconvenience; it is that they didn’t bother to hold your hand or wipe your bottom for you.
